Bridegroom (2013)

The sad tale of what happened to young Californian guy Shane after his boyfriend died went viral on YouTube last year – and now the story has become a compelling film.

Titled Bridegroom, it’ll show how Shane was torn apart after his lover Tom suddenly died in an accident.

He was left ostracised when Tom’s family wanted nothing to do with him, and could not even attend the funeral.The two weren’t married, so Tom had no legal recourse.

“I need to fight for what’s right,” said Shane in his video last year. “I need to fight for what I believe in and I can’t just stand back anymore… no one will listen if you don’t talk.”


Bridegroom was made after 6,500 people funded the project on Kickstarter.com, making it the most funded documentary in the history of the crowd funding movement.

“What ‘Bridegroom’ celebrates is not simply gay rights; it’s the human spirit,” sums up the New York Times in its review.
The movie is currently doing the rounds in film festivals across America, and now Oprah’s TV network OWN has confirmed it’ll be shown later this month as part of a special LGBTI night of programs.
