It was another busy day at Gihan’s law office.  He was going through his daily schedule when the receptionist came into the office;


‘Sir there is a guy that just came to office and he says he want to see you’


‘Does he have an appointment?’ Gihan replied.


‘No sir and I have not seen him before’


‘So then you know what to do..ask him to book an appointment and then I will see him’


‘I already told that to him..but he insists that he needs to see you now’


‘Tell him that we don’t work like that because if I were to see everyone who shows up here right-away, we won’t be able to do any work here..
So tell him that he needs to book an appointment like everyone else or if he can wait till end of the day and then I might be able to see him.’


‘Okay sir I will let him know that‘


Gihan got back to his work then it was time for him to go to courts. The day passed faster than he thought. He met some of his old colleagues 
in the evening and went for a quick drink. It was dark when he passed his office on his way home. Gihan has a habit of stopping at the office
just to make sure the doors are properly closed and lights are down. When he started his practice he used to lock the office at the end of 
the work day. These days one of his staff members usually does the ritual. Still Gihan cannot pass the office without making a stop. 


When he stopped the car by the office, he saw someone sitting on steps. A beggar maybe thought. But when he approached the stranger, he 
realized this is not a beggar. The stranger is well dressed and someone in his mid 20’s. He had a pleasant but worried look to him.
Gihan cleared his throat so the person could hear him.


‘Oh thank God..you came back. I thought I was not going to meet you today. You must be Gihan Amarasooriya’


‘Yes I am..Do i know you and what are you doing here at this time?’


‘You don’t know me and that is not important – I am Anushka..I came to your office today morning and your associate told me that I could 
see you at the end of the day..But they all left little while ago but I decided to stay hoping that you’d show up somehow – and you did’


‘I don’t get this..why do you have to see me so urgently..are you about to get arrested by Police for a alleged crime?’


‘Actually I haven’t done anything like that..but I have a different sort of problem that I need your advice’


‘You should know that I don’t give free advice..you need make formal appointment and then I look at your case and decide if i am
 willing to represent you..I am not sure where we are going with this conversation’


‘It is not like that.. I am in different sort of trouble and I need to find a solution..I have Rs. 10,000 here, If you think that I am not serious’


Gihan thought for a few seconds and spoke.


‘Okay, let me open the office doors and then you can come inside’


After they settle down, Gihan took out his note pad and got into his lawyer mood.


‘Just to remind you that anything you say now is protected under attorney client privilege. .so you can tell me anything that is bothering you
 without any fear’ Gihan  


‘I am already feeling better now because at least I can speak my mind. I have a problem in my life that I need the best advice as to how to fix it…
I have read lot of about you and your reputation as someone who could win in almost any situation.’  


‘Enough for that..Can you tell me why you are here and what you want from me?‘ Gihan was in no mood for accolades.



But Gihan had no idea what he was going to say;

‘The thing is I am in love with a guy and want to find a way to live together’


For a moment Gihan couldn’t believe what he was hearing. It wasn’t the fact that two guys fell in love with each other that 
surprised him...rather why someone would ask his advice in such case.


‘I am sorry I think you came to wrong person for this sort of thing..I only deal with legal matters and court procedures. You need to 
see someone else. It’s just that I don’t know who that person might be. Here is your money and now if you could please excuse me, I 
had long day and like to get some rest’ Gihan stood up.


‘I think you are exactly the person who could help me on this’  his voice was gentle but firm.


After few seconds Gihan started talking again.


‘Okay. I assume you already know about the legal position on about gay marriage in this country. So it is out of question. Now as to
two consenting adults living together, the law isn’t that clear. The best we could hope is that it stays like that. I for one does not like
government coming into people’s bedrooms and say what they could do or not. Did that answer your question?


‘I think I already know what you just told me. I need to find a way to do this without upsetting my parents and friends’


‘Why do you think that they will get upset, If you moved in with another guy?’ Gihan


‘They will for sure. At least I know what my parent’s position on this and it is not up for debate. In-fact these days they are actively 
looking for a bride for me’


‘So if they find a one, tell the girl that you are gay and you like guys’ Gihan


‘I cannot do that. Then my parents will find out who I am and they will get upset’


‘Why do you think that other people are so worried about what you do in your life? You are not the centre of universe in their life. 
They have their own life too. You seem to think other people give so much importance to what you do. Perhaps you are wrong’ Gihan


‘I don’t know what to do and I cannot seems to find a way out of this’


‘You know the way..it just that you don’t have courage to take it. I will tell you a story. When I was in Law faculty, some of my friends 
were into guys. When we left the college most of them got married to girls. Some of those who got married continue seeing guys. 
Few stayed true to their self and didn’t get married. So decide which category you want to be’


‘I will never marry a girl and that I know’


‘So then take the plunge’ Gihan


‘What if there is no bottom?’


‘Then you are safe because there is nothing to stop you’ Gihan


‘Look I really don’t know what to say to you. Only you know the situation you are in. All I am saying is don’t give too much
importance to what others might think or do because of you. Whatever happens the world will continue to spin and sun will rise
from east and everything else will be just fine’ Gihan again.


‘Thank you for seeing me. I know you have busy schedule and honestly didn’t think that I be able to talk with you today. I
should leave now’ he stood up.


‘Here take you money with you. I only change for legal advice and this doesn’t qualify as one’ Gihan


When the person is about to leave the office Gihan spoke again;


‘So what is your decision?’


He didn’t reply and walked out of the office.


‘I am going to take the PLUNGE’ he screamed when he started walking on the road. That brought a smile to Gihan face.


That night when he was on the bed, Gihan was thinking. He had some weird days in the past. But today was a legendary weird day.

I hate computers Jehan thought. His laptop isn’t working again and this was not the first time it happened.
His computer screen gets frozen soon after he re-boot the computer. He was thinking it could be a virus that 
he got from a shady websites that he goes to watch high quality  porn movies, for free. 


Maybe I should cut down watching porn so much, he thought.  Anyway  there is no chance that his parents
are going to buy a new laptop because the current one is barely a year old. So the computer has to go to
repair shop and hopefully it will be quick fix.


‘Mom..my laptop is broken..I think it got a virus. Need to fix it quickly because I cannot do any assignments 
without the computer’  


‘Didn’t we buy this computer last year and now its broken’ mother replied


‘Even brand new computers can get infected by computer viruses mom’


‘Okay..give me the computer I will take it to the repair shop. I was thinking of going to Bambalpitiya
tomorrow anyway.


‘Thanks mom, can you ask them to fix it quickly so I don’t miss any school work?’


‘Okay I will ask them..now get ready to go to school Jehan’


That evening when Jehan came home from school, his computer was back on his table. He was thrilled to 
see it fixed and wondered how his mother was able to get it done in such a short time.  


‘Mom..where did you take my computer to get it fixed?’


‘I was about to take it to the one of the computer shops in Unity Plaza and then I suddenly realized that 
I don’t have to. Remember your cousin Marvan. He is doing an IT Degree in Colombo University so I called him.
He was kind enough to come here and fix your computer..So now you can go back to whatever you were 
doing with that’


For some reason his mother sounded annoyed.


Oh no ..why Marvan..Out of all his cousins, Jahan hated Marvan the most.  This narcissist a-hole is thorn 
in his family..He think he is only smart guy in the family just because he got selected to study engineering 
at government university. He goes on preaching how great the quality of education they receives at the 
university compared to private colleges such as one Jehan is going. Yet mom decided to ask his help..Jehan 
was furious.


‘Mom why did you ask his help..you know very well that I don’t like him and you know my reasons as well’


‘There is nothing wrong asking his help.. he is my sisters son and your blood cousin and he didn’t even
charge anything for his service. He even refuses money I gave him’


‘Oh great..now he is going to go around and tell all our relatives how poor we are and what a great person
he is in helping us..You should have known better. I had no idea that you were going to ask his help..If I knew, I 
would not have come to you for this’


‘Anyway I am glad that I did call him’
‘
What do you mean?’


‘I will tell you about that later..First I need to speak to your father when he comes home tonight’


That sounds like trouble Jehan immediately thought. His mother rarely speaks with his father at night. 
She goes to bed early and not around when his father come home at night after work.  It seems 25 years of their marriage
life has finally taken its toll on them.   

So whatever that is keeping him mom awake tonight must be very important. But what is it - nothing came to Jehan’s mind. 
Jehan is not going to sleep tonight until he figure out this mystery.


So he waited;

I am recovering..slowly..just a virus fever that doesn't want to go away..it seems like old age has finally caught-up with me ..lol
